LOGAN: Two copies of "The Norton Anthology"?
RORY: They were gifts. I can't get rid of gifts.
- Gilmore Girls, Season 7, Episode 9 "Knit People, Knit"
I have a weakness for copies of "The Norton Anthology." I have several. Right now, on my desk I have a copy of "English Literature Volume 1," "English Literature Volume 2," and "Literature by Women." Yes, I seriously have THREE 2,500 page books on my desk just because I like them. When I find a used copy at a library book sale or flea market, I often have to grab it.
While I have enjoyed all of them, the "English Literature Volume 1" is my favorite. I used it in one of my most favorite undergrad courses. I had an amazing professor, and I learned so much from that course and read that book well beyond the required reading. My copy is well loved with post-its, highlighting, margin notes, dog-eared pages, and additional pages shoved throughout the book. I love to revisit that book. I have read a lot since then, but that book, and that course, is where my love of books really grew. I stepped outside of my usual reading comfort zone, found new favorite poems, new favorite words, and learned so much about the history of words and writing.
I loved the scene in Gilmore Girls when Logan questions Rory owning two copies of "The Norton Anthology." If one was going to own two copies of a book, "The Norton Anthologies" are certainly books worth own multiple copies. These books are like potato chips for most people (cups of coffee for all of us here at Books, Ink)…you can't have just one.
