Gilmore Girls Reading Challenge: "Deenie" by Judy Blume

I was looking through the Gilmore Girls Challenge book list this week and noticed a book on it that I have never read..."Deenie" by Judy Blume. Upon seeing the title, I immediately remembered this conversation from Gilmore Girls (Season 6, Episode 11 "The Perfect Dress").

LUKE: I saw her pictures. The one in the lab, and the one with the Christmas tree, and you never told me she wore a back brace! Why was she wearing a back brace?
ANNA: Oh, she had just read 'Deenie'. It was a phase.
LUKE: What the heck is 'Deenie'?
ANNA: The gospel according to Judy Blume.
LUKE: What?
ANNA: It's a book, Luke. And now would probably be a good time for you to read it.

The scene between Luke and Anna takes place shortly after Luke discovered he has a daughter. In the conversation above with Anna, mother of Luke's daughter, she recommends that it would be wise for Luke to read "Deenie" to understand having a teenage daughter.

I picked up a copy this week from the library and have just started reading it. Deenie is the story of a beautiful girl whose mother hopes she will be a model. Deenie isn't concerned about her looks until her doctor tells her that she needs to wear a back brace for the next four years that goes from her neck to her hips. I'm curious to see how  Blume takes the reader through the next few years of Deenie's life.
